Hong Kong Airlines adds Urumqi route, shifts Chengdu flights and launches wide-ranging summer promotions
Hong Kong Airlines (HX) has unveiled an aggressive summer schedule that includes a new wide-body Airbus A330 service between Hong Kong and Urumqi from 29 August 2026. The carrier will also transfer its existing Chengdu operation from Tianfu to Shuangliu Airport on 30 July to leverage better ground-transport links and streamlined cargo handling. The announcement comes as Hong Kong’s visitor arrivals reached 26.7 million in the first half of 2026, up 13 % year-on-year, with mainland travellers accounting for more than three quarters of the total. HX said its sixth-month transfer traffic through Hong Kong grew eight percentage points, highlighting the hub’s role for mainland passengers heading to Southeast Asia, Japan and Australia. To capitalise on peak-season demand the airline has rolled out a “Summer Deals” campaign running until 31 July. Discounts of up to 25 % apply on selected economy and business-class fares for travel 24 August-15 December across key mainland, Taiwan, Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia routes. The promotion is available via HX’s website, mobile app and WeChat mini-program, with combinable add-ons such as prepaid extra baggage and lounge passes. Urumqi will become HX’s first destination in Xinjiang and further deepens Hong Kong’s connectivity with China’s northwest and onward Central-Asian markets. Through partnerships with Hainan Airlines Group carriers, passengers arriving in Urumqi can connect to ten secondary Xinjiang cities under a through-ticket. Corporations with Belt-and-Road projects will gain a one-stop air link from Hong Kong to hubs such as Kashgar and Hami. The airline is maintaining its generous baggage policy – one 23 kg piece in economy and two 32 kg pieces in business – across all routes. Mobility managers moving assignees with heavy personal effects or project cargo may find HX cost-competitive versus FSC rivals. HX’s network growth also provides redundancy for firms whose travel policies require dual-supplier options on trunk mainland routes.
