Hong Kong’s cross-boundary Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL) has carried more than 16 million passengers in the first six months of 2026, the highest half-year figure since the service opened in 2018. According to MTR Corporation, average daily patronage now exceeds 92 000 trips, with weekend peaks regularly surpassing 120 000 and a single-day record of almost 150 000 on 4 April during the Easter/Ching-Ming holiday. Traffic is being fuelled largely by leisure and short-haul business travellers shuttling between Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and other Guangdong cities. Analysts say the figures underline how closely the Greater Bay Area (GBA) economies are knitting together, with Hong Kong residents increasingly treating Shenzhen as an extension of their consumer and work space, while mainland professionals head south for finance and aviation links. To capture premium demand, MTR has partnered with Plaza Premium Group to open an upgraded business-class lounge at West Kowloon terminus later this summer. The facility will provide private work pods, shower suites and on-platform porter services—amenities designed to entice corporate road-warriors who might otherwise fly or drive. Investors note that ancillary revenues from lounge, retail and ticket upgrades are becoming a new earnings pillar for the rail operator. The surge comes as governments on both sides accelerate border-efficiency projects. The Legco-approved Huanggang Port Bill will enable joint immigration processing when the redeveloped crossing opens next year, while Hong Kong’s Immigration Department is rolling out AI-enabled “Face Easy e-Channels” at control points. Taken together, the measures are expected to cut clearance time on key corridors from 30 minutes to under 10, further boosting the attractiveness of rail for same-day business trips. For multinationals, the message is clear: regional staff can now tap a commuter-style network linking Hong Kong’s global financial services with Shenzhen’s tech supply chains in under 20 minutes. Mobility managers should adjust travel policies—particularly mileage reimbursement caps and per-diem rules—to reflect rail’s growing dominance over short-haul flights and car services.
