Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs quietly refreshed its travel advisory for Cyprus on 26 July 2026, issuing new guidance just as the island braces for a late-July heatwave and an influx of international delegations ahead of UN-brokered peace talks. The notice, published on Belgium’s official Diplomatie website, maintains Cyprus at its lowest security rating but adds a specific reminder that temperatures inland are forecast to exceed 40 °C from 28–30 July. Belgian citizens are advised to avoid strenuous travel during peak daylight hours, plan business meetings for early morning or evening, and verify that rental vehicles are equipped with functioning air-conditioning. The advisory also reiterates that the Republic of Cyprus is not yet part of the Schengen Area, meaning Schengen multi-entry visas are not valid for the south of the island, while separate entry rules apply for the Turkish-administered north. For companies rotating staff through Nicosia, Limassol or Larnaca, the FPS highlights two practical steps: ensure that assignees carry hard copies of onward or return tickets to demonstrate the 90-day visa-free stay, and heed local guidance on split working hours that Cypriot authorities may impose when the government’s heat-stress protocol is triggered (usually when the mercury stays above 39 °C for two consecutive days). Belgian insurers have also been alerted that medical claims related to heatstroke have risen 18 percent year-on-year for Cyprus-bound travellers, prompting some underwriters to classify ‘extreme heat events’ as an aggravating factor for pre-existing conditions. Although the advisory does not change Cyprus’s overall risk level, its timing—just one day before UN Secretary-General António Guterres lands on the island—suggests Brussels expects higher traffic at the crossing points and hotels in the UN-buffer zone. Multinationals with regional hubs in Brussels and Nicosia should therefore brief travellers on longer airport queues and limited last-minute hotel availability.
