Cabinet Approves Fully Online Vehicle Registration and Remote Plate Pickup
Foreign residents who dread the queue at Czech vehicle-registration offices received good news on 27 July. The government has endorsed a Transport Ministry amendment that will let owners handle the *entire* registration process online—from a change of ownership to exporting a car—without ever visiting a municipal counter. The reform is modelled on last year’s successful pilot for driving-licence renewals. Beginning in November 2026 for selected transactions and scaling up through 1 July 2027, motorists will file applications through the national Transport Portal and choose how they want their documents delivered. Two new options stand out: • Delivery of plates and the small technical certificate to secure pickup boxes at malls, post offices or petrol stations; • A six-month “plate reservation” that allows sellers to keep a cherished registration number until they buy a new vehicle. Behind the scenes, the register will automatically de-list cars that have lacked both insurance and a technical inspection for five years, and will flag stolen or scrapped vehicles without manual input. An expanded API will also give commercial fleets access to technical-inspection photos—useful for leasing companies managing large expatriate car pools. For mobility professionals the impact is clear. Relocated staff will no longer need a Czech-speaking colleague to accompany them to an office; HR can initiate procedures remotely, reducing hand-over times when employees leave the country. Leasing firms expect lower courier costs and faster turnover of expatriate vehicles. The Transport Ministry says the biggest logistical challenge is scaling secure pickup infrastructure nationwide. It is working with Česká pošta and private parcel-locker operators to ensure at least one 24/7 collection point per district by mid-2027. Companies planning fleet renewals should map future locker locations to avoid last-minute surprises.
