Belgium Updates Travel Advisory for Spain, Highlights Autumn ‘Gota Fría’ Flood Risk and New Road Rules
Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Ministry refreshed its consular travel advice for Spain on 18 September 2026, urging Belgian nationals to prepare for the seasonal ‘gota fría’ (DANA) weather phenomenon that can trigger sudden flash floods along the Mediterranean coast. The notice reminds travellers to monitor Spanish meteorological alerts and to heed local evacuation orders, especially in the Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia regions where intense rainfall is most common. The bulletin also flags a regulatory change on Spanish roads: since 1 January 2026, vehicles registered in Spain must carry a V16 distress beacon instead of the traditional warning triangle. While foreign-plated cars may still use triangles, the ministry recommends that motorists understand the local requirement to avoid fines or complications in case of roadside breakdowns. Beyond weather and road safety, the advisory reiterates standard precautions about pick-pocketing in tourist areas and advises travellers to register itineraries on Belgium’s Travellers Online portal, maintain adequate travel insurance and keep important documents both digitally and in hard copy. Companies with employees on assignment or frequent business trips to Spain should cascade the updated advice, review emergency-contact protocols and confirm that corporate travel insurance covers extreme-weather events. The ministry’s advice carries no legal force but may influence insurers’ coverage decisions and employer duty-of-care assessments.
