Delhi’s North District Police have launched a two-phase operation to root out foreigners living illegally in the capital, detaining nine nationals from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Cameroon for expired visas or missing travel documents. Acting on intelligence, police teams swept Baba Colony and multiple Burari neighbourhoods on 7 and 16 September. Six of the detainees were produced before the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and transferred to Lampur and Sarai Rohilla restriction centres pending deportation. Three others are facing criminal trials and were exempted from immediate removal, while one Cameroonian was released after showing valid papers. The crackdown is part of a wider policy push to tighten immigration compliance ahead of next year’s G-20 legacy projects, with Delhi Police employing dedicated “foreign cell” and “anti-narcotics” units to verify residential status. Businesses that sponsor foreign workers are being reminded of their responsibility to ensure timely visa renewals and address changes through the e-FRRO portal. Corporate mobility managers should expect heightened document checks for expatriates and visiting consultants in Delhi-NCR. Failure to carry original passports, valid visas or e-copies authenticated by the DigiLocker app could invite questioning, short-term detention or fines. Landlords, hosts and serviced-apartment operators are likewise under scrutiny, as police review C-Form filings to match tenants with visa records. For relocation teams, proactive compliance—regular visa-expiry audits, prompt FRRO updates and staff briefings—will be critical to avoid operational disruptions and reputational risk.
