The Transport Department’s updated calendar shows that 22 and 23 September are the last two booking-free days before a string of reservation-only periods leading into Mid-Autumn and National Day. Under the scheme’s rules, bookings are waived every Tuesday and Wednesday except on or adjacent to public holidays. With both Hong Kong and Mainland China declaring 25-27 September statutory holidays, the next booking-free dates will not occur until 29 September. Motorists planning festive journeys must therefore lock in a slot via the Specified Date Booking System no later than noon the day before departure. Officials warn that failure to travel within one’s reserved window—or to cancel in time—can trigger a stepped penalty ladder culminating in a three-month suspension from the scheme. Data from the first eight months of 2026 indicate that 12 % of scheme participants have already received at least one warning letter for no-shows or unscheduled crossings. For business users, today’s booking-free window offered a cost-saving opportunity: cross-boundary couriers and SME owners transporting samples to Zhongshan or Dongguan could depart on short notice, avoiding both reservation fees and potential time-slot misalignments. Logistics consultants nevertheless advise commercial fleets to stick with pre-booked goods-vehicle permits, as passenger-car quotas remain capped at 2,000 per day during peak season. Looking ahead, the Transport Department and Guangdong authorities are studying whether to extend booking-free arrangements to Mondays during off-peak months—a move that chambers of commerce say would further streamline small-batch export runs across the Greater Bay Area.
