The Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) will turn Boa Vista into Brazil’s capital of migration studies next week as it opens the conference “(I)mobility and Borders” from 28 September to 2 October 2026. Scholars, policymakers and civil-society organisations from ten countries are scheduled to debate human-mobility trends, with a strong focus on the Venezuelan displacement that continues to affect northern Brazil. The agenda features panels on humanitarian visas, private-sector integration of refugees, and the lessons learned from Operação Acolhida—the multi-agency initiative that has relocated more than 100,000 Venezuelans from Roraima to other Brazilian states since 2018. Participants will also visit reception centres operated by the army and the UNHCR to observe registration, documentation and interiorisation procedures. For multinationals running facilities in the Amazon or recruiting cross-border talent, the event offers an opportunity to engage directly with officials drafting Brazil’s next National Migration Plan, due for public consultation in early 2027. Companies such as Vale, Anglo American and local agribusiness firms have confirmed attendance at a side workshop on corporate social responsibility and migrant labour compliance. Organisers highlight that the conference coincides with rising pressure on the federal government to expand electronic visa channels for Venezuelan professionals and to streamline recognition of foreign qualifications—measures regarded as critical to plugging skills gaps in construction and healthcare. Proceedings will be livestreamed via UFRR’s YouTube channel, and a policy brief summarising recommendations is expected to be delivered to the ministries of Justice, Labour and Foreign Affairs by mid-October.
