The governing coalition hails the numbers as proof that its tougher stance works; opposition parties and NGOs counter that deaths per attempted crossing are rising. The Interior Ministry confirmed 6,543 repatriations year-to-date (most forced), suggesting a more aggressive return policy. Companies should monitor possible demonstrations around migrant reception centres, which have previously disrupted commuter traffic in Lombardy industrial zones. Practically, HR teams should update relocation briefings: provincial police headquarters are prioritising first-time residence-permit applicants over renewals, making advance booking of Questura appointments essential. The data also indicate increased prevalence of Bangladeshi and Algerian workers, useful intelligence for firms recruiting in logistics, agri-food and hospitality.
