Coalition defends plan to slash international student numbers and create new project visas
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has doubled-down on the Coalition’s draft migration strategy unveiled this week, telling SBS News that Australia must ‘put skills before university revenue’ as it targets a historic reduction in net overseas migration. The blueprint would cut new student-visa grants from 528,000 to 456,000 a year while introducing capped visas for major infrastructure projects (15,000 annually) and a dedicated agriculture visa. Taylor argues that universities have been allowed to dictate the composition of arrivals for too long, with places effectively ‘allocated by the universities, not the government’. He insists a new government-controlled quota system will channel graduates directly into sectors facing skill shortages such as construction, engineering and healthcare. Business and education groups counter that the policy risks stripping A$9 billion from export education and undermining post-study talent pipelines that feed Australia’s innovation economy. An SBS transcript shows mixed messages on the social-care workforce. After initially stating ‘some’ aged-care visas would be caught by the cuts, Taylor later told reporters no aged-care workers would be affected, citing yet-to-be-detailed transition measures. For global-mobility and HR teams the proposal would tighten the supply of graduate-level talent and require closer liaison with labour-agreement streams or Skills-in-Demand visas to secure entry-level engineers and IT professionals. Organisations planning major projects could benefit from the promised fast-track visa, but only if caps are not quickly exhausted. With an election still at least six months away, the Coalition has not released modelling on economic impacts or specified English-language and salary thresholds for the new visas, leaving businesses to scenario-plan multiple policy outcomes.
