Hong Kong’s Transport Department (TD) issued a series of special traffic bulletins on the evening of 7 October alerting travellers to immediate ferry service cancellations and extensive road closures linked to upcoming major events. The Ma Wan – Tsuen Wan commuter ferry at 08:10 and its return sailing at 08:30 were cancelled, while several Ma Wan – Central departures have been replaced by emergency bus services. The department also detailed large-scale closures and diversions on 11 October for the annual Hong Kong Cyclothon, which will shut sections of Lantau Link, Ting Kau Bridge, West Kowloon Highway and the Central Kowloon Bypass from as early as 01:00. Motorists from the New Territories West heading to Hong Kong International Airport will need to reroute via Tsuen Wan Road, Tsing Yi North Coastal Road and Tsing Ma Bridge. Airport-bound passengers and business travellers connecting to cross-border coaches are advised to build in additional buffer time, as journey durations between urban areas and Chek Lap Kok could lengthen significantly during diversions. The TD is coordinating with bus, MTR and Gold-Bus operators to increase frequencies, but warns that waiting times will still spike during peak hours of the National Day “Golden Week” return flow. From a mobility-management perspective, companies with expatriate staff flying in for Monday board meetings or regional conferences should review flight arrival times against the 11 October closures. Travel managers may wish to shift hotel pick-ups to the Airport Express or pre-book licensed taxis positioned on the airport island to avoid city-side gridlock. The bulletin underscores the interconnected nature of Hong Kong’s multiple transport modes—road, ferry, rail and cross-boundary services—and the need for real-time information. TD recommends that residents and visitors download the “HKeMobility” app for live CCTV feeds at control points and variable message signs, illustrating the city’s increasing reliance on digital platforms to maintain travel resilience.
