The Maldivian country page on Austria’s BMEIA portal received its latest timestamp on 9 October 2026. While the overall risk level remains moderate (Sicherheitsstufe 2 outside Malé and 3 in the capital), the ministry has amplified guidance on entry documentation after reports of Austrian travellers being turned away for insufficient passport validity. The advisory clarifies that a 30-day tourist visa is still issued free of charge on arrival, *provided* passports are valid for at least one month—shorter than the six-month rule applied by many other destinations. However, immigration officers are increasingly demanding proof of onward travel and “sufficient funds”, with anecdotal evidence of EUR 100 per day as the benchmark. For corporate travellers attending resort or infrastructure projects, BMEIA recommends carrying company invitation letters and booking confirmations to avoid delays. Importantly, electronic ID cards (ID Austria) are not accepted; only physical passports or cream-coloured emergency passports are valid. The ministry also cautions about the online “Traveller Declaration” that must be filed within 96 hours before arrival. Several unofficial websites have begun charging fees for the otherwise free form; travellers should use only the government portal. With the Maldives hosting multiple Austrian-backed hospitality investments, ensuring seamless entry is critical as year-end site-inspections ramp up.
