Home Affairs quietly brings next SkillSelect invitation round forward to 15 October
Corporate mobility managers breathed a sigh of relief overnight after spotting a subtle but potentially game-changing date change on the Department of Home Affairs website. Late on 9 October, the “Invitation rounds” page was refreshed to show that the next Skilled Independent (subclass 189) invitation round will now run on 15 October instead of 30 October. No announcement accompanied the edit, but the page carries an official “last updated 9 October 2026, 16:20” stamp. The invitation-round timetable matters because a subclass 189 invitation is the trigger that allows thousands of highly-skilled foreign nationals already working in Australia on temporary visas – as well as offshore talent – to lodge a permanent-residence application. By restoring the mid-month date the department effectively shaves a fortnight off many candidates’ waiting time and keeps the 2026-27 skilled-migration program on schedule after last week’s unexplained postponement to 30 October. Immigration lawyers say the reversal will help employers convert valued staff before Christmas. “If you have graduates whose 485 visas expire in December or 482 workers who are bumping up against their four-year limit, an invitation in mid-October instead of the end of the month could be the difference between staying or leaving,” notes Sydney-based agent Maria Lopez. The move also signals that Canberra is conscious of criticism that visa processing has slowed since tougher integrity checks were introduced on 2 October. Bringing the round forward should ease pressure on the Expression-of-Interest pool, which EOI Insights estimates swelled to more than 184,000 submissions in September. Employers are urged to double-check that skills assessments, English tests and police clearances are valid so that any invitation received on 15 October can be converted into a valid application within the 60-day deadline. Strategically, the shift suggests Home Affairs is keen to demonstrate that the skilled stream remains a priority even as both major parties talk of headline cuts to overall migration. Mobility teams should brief candidates on the new timeline and keep an eye on the live “Invitation rounds” page, which remains the only authoritative source for date changes.
