Latest immigration data show skilled-visa rebound, student-visa correction
Migratio’s annual statistical roundup—updated 11 October—compiles eleven years of Department of Home Affairs and ABS data, revealing that skilled permanent-visa grants recovered to 132 148 in 2024-25, above pre-COVID norms, while student-visa grants dropped back to 371 564 after a record 577 295 surge in 2022-23. Net-overseas-migration for the year to March 2026 stood at 292 100, down from the post-reopening spike of 538 340 but still well above the long-term average. India remained the top source of permanent migrants for a seventh straight year, accounting for 48 326 places. For employers the data confirm a tightening graduate-talent pool and a re-normalising of student numbers, increasing competition for skilled pathways such as employer sponsorship and the forthcoming Skills-in-Demand visa. Mobility planners should update salary benchmarks and pipeline models against these adjusted volumes.
