Civil Protection Issues National Yellow Weather Alert Impacting Travel in Five Regions
The Italian Civil Protection Department (DPC) has published a yellow-level weather alert for Monday, 12 October, covering parts of Tuscany, Abruzzo, Campania, Calabria and Sicily. The ‘Bollettino di Criticità’ released at 14:43 warns of heavy rain, localised thunderstorms and possible hydro-geological instability throughout the afternoon and evening. While a yellow alert is the lowest on the three-step scale (yellow, orange, red), airports in Florence (FLR) and Naples (NAP) have already activated wet-runway procedures that typically add 15 minutes to arrival spacing. Maritime authorities in the Strait of Messina have advised ferry operators to evaluate sailings on a case-by-case basis, and the A3 motorway concessionaire is broadcasting advisory speed limits between Battipaglia and Cosenza. For employers managing domestic or cross-border assignments, the alert serves as a reminder that Italy’s weather-related emergency system can generate rapid transport constraints, especially where rail lines cross flood-prone river valleys. Assignees travelling on the Rome–Reggio Calabria high-speed route should verify train status before departure; past yellow alerts have led to speed restrictions near Paola station, adding up to 40 minutes to journey times. Under Legislative Decree 81/08, companies remain responsible for duty of care when staff travel on assignment. Best practice is to couple official DPC alerts with corporate travel-tracking platforms so HR can trigger SMS notifications as colour levels escalate. If alerts rise to orange, some regional governments can order preventive school closures and road shutdowns, which in turn affect employee childcare and commuting. The DPC will issue an updated bulletin at 18:00; mobility managers should monitor for possible upgrades to orange in Campania, where cumulative rainfall may exceed 80 mm overnight.
