Police in Saxony are investigating a security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a private car crashed through the northern perimeter fence shortly after midnight on 19 October 2026. The incident forced the closure of the northern runway and suspension of cargo and passenger movements on that side of the airport for several hours. According to the state police command, two suspects turned themselves in on Monday afternoon. Preliminary findings suggest the driver lost control on an adjacent public road and accidentally rammed the fence; investigators found no evidence of extremist motives. Nevertheless, the breach triggered a full security protocol: flight diversions to Dresden and Berlin, deployment of federal police with sniffer dogs, and a runway inspection to rule out debris damage. Leipzig/Halle is Germany’s second-largest cargo hub and a strategic DHL Express centre. Night-time operations are critical to the integrator’s European network, and DHL confirmed that around 20 freight flights were rerouted, causing knock-on delays to next-day deliveries. Passenger disruption was limited because most commercial flights use the southern runway, but early-morning departures to Cologne, Munich and Vienna left up to two hours late. Airlines and ground handlers praised the airport’s rapid-response plan but called for better physical barriers at known road “run-offs.” Aviation-security analysts note that this is the third fence-breach at a German airport in 18 months and will increase pressure on operators to invest in anti-ram bollards and surveillance AI under the forthcoming EU Aviation Security Regulation revision. Employers with time-critical air freight should build additional slack into just-in-time supply chains over the coming days while the investigation continues and repairs are completed.
