Travel-technology giant Amadeus confirmed in a 19 October 2026 press release that it is supplying its Seamless Gate biometric hardware to all major UK airports as part of the Home Office’s contactless border project. East Midlands Airport went live on 6 October; Birmingham followed today, with Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester next in line. The system captures a live facial image as passengers walk through and matches it to the encrypted chip in their passport read earlier at airline check-in. Data flows via a new ‘Border of the Future’ platform jointly built by Border Force and the Cabinet Office’s Digital Identity Directorate. For airlines, integration promises cost savings through faster turnaround times: Amadeus modelling suggests a wide-body arrival can be processed 12 minutes faster, allowing an extra daily rotation on busy transatlantic routes. Airport operators, meanwhile, can repurpose freed-up border halls for retail space—a revenue boost welcomed by Gatwick and Stansted, which lost duty-free income after Brexit. Amadeus says the UK deployment is its largest in Europe and will serve as a template for Schengen Entry/Exit System upgrades when the EU introduces its own biometric borders in mid-2027. Multinationals moving staff between UK and EU hubs should therefore prepare employees for a passport-less, facial-recognition travel experience within 18 months.
