UK launches contactless eGates at Birmingham Airport, kicking-off nationwide biometric border rollout
Business travellers touching down at Birmingham Airport this morning became the first in Britain to clear the border without presenting a passport. Border Force confirmed that a bank of upgraded “contactless eGates” went live at 05:30, allowing eligible passengers to walk up, pause for a photo and proceed once facial biometrics are matched against Home Office databases and the chip in their passport that was read at airline check-in. The move is part of a £300 million programme to replace all 270 eGates across 13 UK airports with camera-only gates by early 2027. Officials estimate the new system shaves 8–12 seconds off each transaction, equating to an hour saved for a wide-body arrival at peak time. For corporate mobility managers the benefits go beyond shorter queues. The system links directly to the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) platform and the eVisa database, meaning carriers and airports receive a real-time “authority to carry” message before wheels-up. This allows advance secondary targeting of high-risk passengers and reduces the need for spot-checks that routinely delay premium passengers. Airlines that integrate their departure control systems with the new API will avoid fines for carrying inadmissible travellers and may qualify for reduced security charges. Birmingham Airport has been chosen as the live pilot because of its growing long-haul network to India, the Middle East and North America. Chief Executive Nick Barton said the airport handled 300,000 business visitors last year and is targeting 30 million passengers annually by 2033; faster border clearance is “vital to securing additional nonstop routes to priority markets.” Gatwick and Manchester are scheduled to switch on contactless lanes in November, followed by Heathrow’s T5 in January 2027. Border technology supplier Amadeus, which provided the Seamless Gate hardware and orchestration software, told CAPA that its gates can read ICAO Digital Travel Credentials stored in Apple and Google wallets as soon as the UK enables digital IDs—likely in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Civil Aviation Authority is consulting on allowing participating airlines to offer fully paperless travel on selected UK-US routes next summer. In practical terms, travellers should still carry a valid passport, as anyone pulled aside for a customs examination must be able to present a document. Non-biometric passports and nationals not eligible for eGates (including most first-time visa holders) will continue to use staffed booths. However, today’s launch marks a decisive step towards the government’s ambition of a “world-leading digital border” and signals to multinational companies that the UK intends to stay competitive for high-value visitors in the post-Brexit era.
