Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) 14 October processing-time refresh—widely watched by education agents—was published on 21 October and immediately rippled through India’s student-recruitment ecosystem. The headline change: study-permit estimates for applicants lodging from India rose to seven weeks, up from six the previous week. Work-permit timelines held steady at 11 weeks, while visitor-visa estimates improved marginally to 29 days; super-visa (parents and grandparents) processing slipped to 77 days. Although IRCC stresses that the figures are rolling estimates, Indian universities and pathway providers rely on them to time intakes and deferral windows. The extra week could push late-fall arrivals into the winter term if biometrics scheduling or medical examinations cause further delay. Advisers are urging applicants to upload complete documents—including up-front medicals—at first submission and to monitor MyCIC accounts daily for additional document requests in order to avoid cascading knock-ons. Corporates that second employees on short-term work permits should budget the full 11-week window and consider intra-company transferee provisions under Canada’s International Mobility Program to mitigate project slippage. Meanwhile, the small improvement in visitor-visa timelines is welcome news ahead of the year-end travel surge, but the 29-day estimate still doubles IRCC’s 14-day service standard, so executives should avoid last-minute trip planning. Indian families exploring the super-visa route for long-term parental stays face the harshest reality: at 77 days, applications lodged after Diwali may not be finalised before the peak summer travel season in Canada. Travel insurers also note that policies must be issued before final approval, adding to the lead time. IRCC is expected to issue its next update around 28 October. Observers will be watching whether the recent hiring of 800 additional officers, announced in September, begins to compress backlogs before Canadian colleges open January intake.
