In a second Middle-East alert within hours, DFAT on 23 October 2026 upgraded its advice for Bahrain to ‘Reconsider Your Need to Travel’. The decision follows a series of regional reprisals that have targeted military and energy facilities in the Gulf, including sites in and around Manama. The advisory notes an elevated likelihood of drone and missile attacks on critical infrastructure, potential anti-Western protests, and sudden airspace closures that could strand travellers. Australians are urged to avoid military bases and government buildings, secure contingency supplies, and stay informed via local authorities. From a mobility standpoint, the change affects fly-in-fly-out engineering and defence personnel supporting projects in Bahrain as well as Australian passport holders transiting through the country’s visa-on-arrival program. Companies should update risk assessments, confirm that employees have multi-entry visas for alternative hubs such as Doha or Dubai, and remind staff that photographing security installations can attract severe penalties. DFAT also highlights a temporary online passport-renewal service for Australians in Bahrain, an option that may prove critical if in-person consular visits become unsafe. Travellers are reminded that standard travel-insurance policies may be voided if they ignore an official Level 3 alert. The Gulf escalation is evolving rapidly, and organisations with regional operations are advised to sign up for Smartraveller email alerts and maintain daily contact with in-country security providers.
