Showcasing Ireland’s growing profile as a test-bed for advanced connectivity, Minister of State Frank Feighan unveiled an airborne 4G/5G communications platform at Mobile World Congress (MWC26) in Barcelona on 2 March 2026. Developed by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer with partners such as Cisco, Qualcomm and Irish firm Druid Software, the system can be deployed on drones or light aircraft to blanket large areas with secure broadband during crises. Although designed for emergency responders, the technology has direct implications for the future of passenger transport. Demonstrated under the GSMA’s “Airport of the Future” programme, the network promises resilient connectivity for diverted aircraft and stranded travellers when terrestrial masts fail—an increasingly relevant scenario given recent weather- and conflict-related disruptions. Feighan highlighted successful trials during a multi-agency exercise in Westport, Co. Mayo in September 2025, where the airborne cell enabled real-time data sharing between coast-guard helicopters, ambulance crews and air-traffic control. The system aligns with the EU’s Critical Communication System (EUCCS) roadmap, aiming for interoperable cross-border public-safety networks by 2030. For airlines and airport operators, the prospect of deployable connectivity could revolutionise contingency planning—maintaining passenger-processing, biometric gates and baggage tracking even when ground infrastructure is compromised. Travel-risk consultancies expect early adoption at regional Irish airports vulnerable to Atlantic storms, with potential roll-out at major hubs once regulatory standards are finalised.
