Balearic Islands record 24 % rise in small-boat arrivals despite national downward trend

From 1 January to 31 March, 1,179 migrants reached Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera—up almost a quarter on the same period in 2025. The boats, mostly rigid-hulled inflatables launched from Algeria’s Oran coast, arrived in 57 separate landings, a 26.7 % increase year-on-year. Strategically, analysts say the Balearics are becoming an alternative corridor because the shorter Algeria–Balearics crossing evades intensified surveillance around the Canary–Atlantic route.
