Mainland Chinese travellers accounted for 714,765 entries—up 4.8 per cent—while outbound trips by Hong Kong residents topped one million. Hotel associations report occupancy edging toward 90 per cent, yet restaurateurs and luxury-retail managers note that spending remains uneven, with value-conscious tourists favouring quick-service eateries and outlet malls over fine dining. Analysts attribute the shift to the easing of individual-visit quotas in many Guangdong cities, which allows travellers to make shorter, cheaper multi-entry trips instead of one big holiday. For mobility planners, the numbers confirm that Hong Kong’s cross-boundary infrastructure—from the Express Rail Link to expanded coach services—has largely normalised after pandemic-era controls. Nevertheless, peak-hour congestion re-emerged at the Lok Ma Chau and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints on 2 May, prompting calls for more e-channel lanes and real-time crowd-management apps. Retail federations say they will lobby for streamlined group-visa processing so that incentive tours can be routed through less-busy ports such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Meanwhile, the Tourism Board is rolling out digital coupons targeting high-spending segments, including MICE delegates, to capture more value from the visitor rebound.
