VFS Global, Poland’s outsourced visa-application partner in 21 countries, has quietly launched a dedicated mobile application that allows travellers to schedule appointments and pre-populate Schengen visa forms directly from their smartphones. Announced on 6 May, the app replicates the web-portal process but adds optical-character recognition and NFC passport-chip reading so applicants can upload biometric data without visiting an office first. The service is currently available in English, Polish and Russian on both iOS and Android. According to VFS, scanned passport data are encrypted client-side and transmitted to Polish consulates only after applicants confirm a time slot and pay the service fee. The provider cautions users against unofficial third-party tools that have proliferated in high-demand locations such as Minsk and New Delhi. The move is likely to be welcomed by corporate mobility teams that struggle with “ghost bookings” and limited appointment inventory. Because the app auto-validates passport numbers against ICAO standards, incomplete or mistyped submissions—one of the main causes of rejections—should drop sharply. For travellers in markets where appointment scalping is rife, the mobile channel could reduce costs and planning uncertainty. VFS says additional features—such as push notifications for earlier slots and integrated courier tracking—will be added before peak student-travel season in July. Polish consulates have not announced any changes to document check-lists, but practitioners expect Warsaw to mandate electronic payment receipts issued through the new platform as proof of appointment soon, bringing the process into line with other Schengen states that already use mobile booking tools.
