Advocacy organisation Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) has issued a scathing response to comments made by Immigration Minister Tony Burke during a podcast with Indian Link Media, in which he floated pathways to permanent residency and citizenship for the country’s three million long-term temporary visa holders. In a 7 May statement, SPA argues the proposal would push Australia beyond its “ecological limits”, citing strained housing supply, infrastructure backlogs and under-representation of migrants in the construction trades. The group is calling for a drastic reduction in temporary-visa offerings and an annual net-migration target of about 70,000—less than a quarter of recent inflows. The clash highlights widening policy rifts: where business groups champion migration as a fix for labour shortages, environmental and population NGOs worry about carbon footprints and resource depletion. Burke has not formally endorsed SPA’s numbers but maintains that giving long-term residents a stake in the nation promotes social cohesion and reduces exploitation.
