Vlaams Belang mounts filibuster to delay Belgian transposition of EU Migration & Asylum Pact
Belgium’s far-right Vlaams Belang (VB) party launched a parliamentary obstruction campaign on 3 June aimed at stopping the federal Chamber of Representatives from adopting legislation needed to align national law with the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, which starts applying on 12 June. VB deputies submitted dozens of amendments and used procedural motions to slow debate in the Home Affairs Committee, vowing to continue until after the Pact’s entry-into-force date. The party claims the Pact’s solidarity mechanism—under which countries that refuse to take relocated asylum seekers must pay cash contributions—violates Belgian sovereignty.

For employers, HR managers, and individual travelers trying to stay ahead of these shifting rules, VisaHQ can be a useful ally. Its Belgium portal (https://www.visahq.com/belgium/) tracks regulatory updates in real time and provides hands-on assistance with work permits, residency filings, and business visa applications, helping applicants avoid delays that political uncertainty can trigger.

It wants Prime Minister Bart De Wever to seek an “opt-out” at the 18-19 June European Council. Government parties and the opposition N-VA accuse VB of “political theatre”, noting that most of the Pact consists of directly applicable EU regulations that will take effect regardless of national implementing laws. Practically, the delay could create gaps in Belgium’s legal framework for border-screening and accelerated return procedures, complicating decisions by corporate mobility teams who rely on predictable asylum backlogs to plan local hiring. Lawyers warn that without the transposition bill, regional authorities may lack clarity on how the new Screening Regulation interacts with existing Single-Permit processing rules. Multinational employers with inbound talent pipelines should monitor whether Belgian authorities issue transitional guidance. If the filibuster drags on, residence applications from third-country nationals who later claim asylum could find themselves in legal limbo, raising the risk of unexpected work-authorisation suspensions.
