The Hong Kong Immigration Department has confirmed that its long-promised “Seamless e-Channel” service will go live at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HKZMB) Boundary Crossing on 25 June 2026. The pilot will allow pre-enrolled Hong Kong permanent residents to keep walking while a line-up of cameras and sensors check the chip in their smart identity card, match their face biometrics and automatically lift the exit gate – all without presenting a document or pausing at a counter. To qualify, travellers must: (1) be aged 11 or above; (2) hold a next-generation smart ID card; and (3) have crossed the HKZMB at least 10 times in the past 90 days. Enrolment can be completed in minutes through the Immigration Department’s Contactless e-Channel mobile app, which captures facial data and issues a QR token that is stored on the device. Minors require parental consent. For business communities that hop daily between Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong’s west bank manufacturing hubs, the system promises to cut clearance time to “a few seconds” and raise the hourly handling capacity of the bridge’s departure hall by 30 per cent. The authorities see the scheme as a showcase for frictionless travel within the Greater Bay Area and say it could be expanded to the airport and high-speed rail as early as next year if the trial proves stable. Companies are already adjusting their mobility policies: several cross-border shuttle operators said they will update employee travel handbooks to include app-based enrolment instructions, and HR managers are being advised to remind frequent travellers that they must still carry their ID card as a back-up in case of system outage. The Immigration Department has opened a dedicated hotline (+852 2824 6111) for corporate enquiries and stressed that conventional e-Channels and staffed counters will remain available for passengers who prefer traditional processing.
