Austrian Airlines (AUA) announced late on 11 June that it is extending the suspension of its Vienna–Tel Aviv service through Monday, 15 June 2026, citing a deteriorating security situation in Israel. The decision, reached in coordination with parent group Lufthansa’s security unit, affects twice-daily OS 857/858 rotations that are popular with business travellers and diplomats. Passengers have been offered rerouting options via Zurich, Munich or Istanbul, though capacity is tight as several Gulf carriers have also reduced frequencies. AUA is waiving change fees and offering full refunds, but travel-management companies report difficulty in securing equivalent timings for onward connections to East Africa and India. The carrier says it will review intelligence updates daily and aims to resume limited operations from 16 June, subject to risk assessments. Insurance brokers caution that some corporate travel policies exclude war-risk zones; mobility managers should verify coverage for staff forced onto alternative itineraries. Israel is Austria’s fourth-largest non-EU export market in the Middle East, and the Vienna–Tel Aviv link is critical for technology and life-sciences trade missions. Any prolonged suspension could push travellers onto parallel services from Bratislava or Budapest, adding ground-transport time and compliance checks at the Slovak or Hungarian borders.
