Austria to end fixed border checkpoints on 15 June – regional politicians demand ‘mobile controls’
The Interior Ministry has confirmed that Austria will lift its stationary border checkpoints with Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia at 24:00 on 15 June 2026. The controls – in place almost continuously since the 2015 refugee crisis – will give way to risk-based patrols and mobile license-plate scans.

For businesses and individual travelers who need clarity on entry rules once the fixed checkpoints disappear, VisaHQ can simplify the paperwork. The service’s Austria page (https://www.visahq.com/austria/) provides up-to-date information on Schengen visas, work permits, and transit documentation, helping companies and commuters stay compliant as they adapt to the new border regime.

Oberösterreich’s ruling ÖVP welcomed the decision but warned that illegal crossings and people-smuggling “remain a daily reality”. Party secretary Florian Hiegelsberger called for a dense «Grenzraumkontrolle» network of roving patrols within 20 kilometres of the frontier, arguing that GEAS will only succeed if interior security is maintained. For cross-border commuters and logistics firms the change promises shorter waits at hotspots such as the A4 Nickelsdorf crossing. However, transport associations note that Germany’s own controls on the Austrian side (at Walserberg and Kufstein) are still in place until at least mid-June, which could create bottlenecks in the opposite direction. Legal experts remind employers that Schengen’s suspension clauses allow Vienna to re-introduce fixed checks if security deteriorates; mobility programmes should thus retain contingency plans for driver routings and assignment start dates.
