Switzerland Re-imposes Schengen Checks with France 10-19 June for G7 Security
In an extraordinary measure under Schengen Article 25, the Swiss Federal Council has reinstated internal-border checks with France from 10-19 June. The move, detailed in a Geneva-canton FAQ published on 13 June, authorises passport inspection at previously open crossings and introduces a restricted airspace (10 June 13:00 to 18 June 03:00) over the Léman basin. Swiss customs officers, supported by up to 4 000 armed-forces personnel, will focus on seven main crossings; 28 minor posts are fully closed. Freight operators must now file customs manifests electronically two hours before arrival, and coach companies transporting summit support staff have been assigned staggered time-slots. For French exporters, the temporary measure effectively converts a friction-less Schengen frontier into a hard border for nine days. Chambers of commerce on both sides warn of potential delivery delays for just-in-time supply chains serving watchmaking and biotech clusters around Geneva. HR teams with cross-border commuters should ensure staff carry valid passports rather than ID cards, which may be subject to secondary checks. The Swiss government will reimburse up to 80 % of cantonal security costs, but business associations fear lost revenue from day-trippers who normally shop across the border. Retail analytics firm Lammetry projects a 40 % drop in footfall at Genève Centre commercial malls during the summit window. Swiss officials insist checks will cease on 19 June, yet past experience with the 2003 G8 suggests a phased draw-down, meaning intermittent controls could linger. Companies are advised to monitor the “G7.ge.ch” live map for reopening updates.
