flydubai inaugurates first direct Dubai–Benghazi service, unlocking new North-Africa corridor
Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai touched down in Benghazi on 18 June, becoming the first UAE airline to operate scheduled flights to Libya’s second-largest city since 2014. Flight FZ1147 received a water-cannon salute at Benina International Airport before turning around as FZ1148 to Dubai International’s Terminal 3. Route specifics: The thrice-weekly service (Mon/Wed/Fri) departs DXB at 06:50, arriving in Benghazi at 10:45. Economy Lite fares start at AED 4,500 (around USD 1,225) return; Business Class from AED 10,500. The route is sold under flydubai’s codeshare with Emirates, enabling through-checked baggage and single-ticket itineraries beyond Dubai. Strategic significance: 1) Trade: Libya is rebuilding infrastructure and oil facilities; UAE contractors and service firms now gain a faster link. 2) Diaspora traffic: An estimated 35,000 Libyans live in the UAE; until now they needed multi-stop routings via Cairo or Tunis. 3) Network expansion: Benghazi is flydubai’s 13th African destination, underscoring Dubai’s push to connect underserved secondary cities. Risk management: Libya remains a high-security environment. flydubai says it has "conducted extensive safety assessments" and is working with local authorities. Corporate travel policies should require close coordination with security providers; many insurers classify Libya as elevated-risk, which may trigger premium surcharges or coverage restrictions.

For passengers unsure about shifting visa rules on either end of the new route, VisaHQ can streamline the process. Its portal (https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/) provides up-to-date requirements, document reviews, and application handling for both UAE and Libyan visas, helping travelers avoid costly delays while regulations continue to evolve.

Future outlook: If demand holds, flydubai could upgrade the route to daily service and offer onward Emirates connections via DXB’s hub. Competitors such as EgyptAir and Turkish Airlines may respond with capacity adjustments on their Libya flights, but direct UAE–Libya service gives Dubai a first-mover advantage in capturing reconstruction traffic.
