Emirates adds conflict-cover travel insurance to all markets, bolstering Dubai’s resilience as a global hub
In the middle of the post-war airspace recovery, Emirates has taken an unprecedented step to reassure travellers who still have misgivings about flying through the Gulf. On 17 June 2026 the Dubai-based carrier launched what it calls “Comprehensive Travel Cover”, an optional add-on that bundles the usual medical, cancellation and baggage benefits with a new layer of protection for conflict-related incidents. The policy, underwritten by AIG’s Travel Guard, will reimburse up to US $25,000 in medical expenses should a customer be injured in an act of war or civil unrest, and will automatically extend a trip by up to 30 days if airspace closures strand passengers overseas.

According to Emirates president Sir Tim Clark, the move is a direct response to customer feedback gathered in the aftermath of the Iran–US war that briefly shut the Strait of Hormuz and forced Gulf carriers onto expensive detours. “Demand for travel remains strong,” Clark said, “but there is a clear gap in the insurance market around geopolitical disruption. We decided to fill it ourselves so that customers can continue to plan with confidence.”

Travellers should also remember that unexpected rerouting or extended layovers can trigger new visa requirements. A convenient way to manage such contingencies is through VisaHQ, an online visa and passport agency that can secure emergency transit or short-stay permits for more than 200 jurisdictions—including the UAE—often within 24 hours (see https://www.visahq.com/united-arab-emirates/). Having a single dashboard for multiple travellers allows corporate mobility teams to react quickly when Emirates rebooks passengers through alternative hubs, ensuring documentation keeps pace with the airline’s expanded duty-of-care services.

The cover goes beyond a simple insurance product. If a route is suspended because of conflict-related airspace restrictions, Emirates will proactively rebook affected passengers on partner airlines at no additional cost and provide airline-managed hotel accommodation rather than a cash reimbursement claim. By hard-wiring duty-of-care services into the policy, Emirates essentially converts a potential immigration headache—unexpected visa extensions, overstay fines, and medical bills—into a managed airline service.

From a global-mobility perspective the announcement matters for three reasons. First, Dubai remains the preferred connection point for corporate travellers shuttling between Asia, Europe and Africa; easing risk perceptions helps multinationals keep assignment and rotation schedules on track. Second, the conflict clause sets a new benchmark that other hub carriers may feel pressure to match, improving traveller protection standards industry-wide. Third, because the product is valid even when governments advise against travel, mobility managers will need to update their duty-of-care assessments and travel-approval workflows to avoid duplicate or insufficient coverage.

Human-resources teams should brief travelling staff that the policy is sold during booking or via “Manage Booking”, with initial rollout in 30 source markets including the UAE, UK, Singapore and South Africa. Companies that self-insure for travel risk may wish to opt out to avoid overlap, while smaller firms could see cost savings by relying on the airline product when itineraries are Emirates-centric.
