Non-profit networks across Austria used World Refugee Day on 20 June to spotlight the integration challenges that remain despite falling asylum numbers. In Klagenfurt, the NGO Kärnten andas hosted a “Peace in a Box” street installation where visitors penned messages of welcome on cardboard cubes, later assembled into a symbolic shelter. The programme was one of dozens listed by UNHCR Austria to commemorate the day. Speakers urged the federal government to prioritise family-reunification backlogs and to transpose the EU Asylum Pact with safeguards for unaccompanied minors. Employers’ federation IV welcomed the focus on integration, noting that Austrian industry still needs 50,000 additional workers and that speedy recognition of refugee qualifications could ease shortages in logistics and care. For mobility managers the takeaway is twofold: first, CSR teams may find ready-made volunteer opportunities in legal-mentorship schemes launched this week; second, the political narrative is shifting from arrival management to labour-market inclusion, which could unlock new upskilling subsidies for companies that hire recognised refugees. Organisers plan to tour the installation to Linz and Graz in July, aiming to keep migration on the public agenda as Austria enters election season.
