India Restarts and Expands Tourist Visa Operations in Bangladesh
After nearly two years of suspension triggered by political unrest and security incidents, the High Commission of India in Dhaka has resumed tourist-visa processing and—within five days—announced an expansion of capacity across Bangladesh. On 3 July 2026 the mission said more than 1,200 visas were issued on day one (28 June) and that additional staff and counters will now be deployed at Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna.

For Bangladeshi residents who would rather have professional assistance with their paperwork, VisaHQ offers a streamlined online service for Indian visas. Through its India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/), the company supplies up-to-date requirements, secure document uploads and real-time application tracking, making the process faster and reducing the risk of costly mistakes.

Medical travel, shopping trips and religious tourism had continued in limited form via emergency visas, but the blanket halt on regular tourist visas since August 2024 created a huge backlog. The resumption aligns with New Delhi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and is timed to capture the Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja travel peaks, which traditionally see tens of thousands of Bangladeshis visit India’s eastern states. For Indian businesses, the reopening is equally significant. Bangladesh is India’s sixth-largest source market for inbound medical tourism and a growing consumer base for retail and hospitality sectors in Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. Travel agents expect demand to normalise by September, meaning companies should prepare for increased hotel bookings and flight loads on Dhaka–Delhi and Chattogram–Kolkata routes. The High Commission emphasised that urgent medical visas will remain prioritised and hinted at future digitisation, including e-visas for short-term travellers. Meanwhile, applicants are advised to use authorised IVACs only, as fraudulent middlemen proliferated during the suspension.
