Germany still refuses digital ‘ID Austria’ at its borders, Vienna reminds summer commuters
With holiday season traffic peaking, the Austrian Foreign Ministry has reiterated that Germany will not accept the electronic ‘ID Austria’ as a stand-alone travel document. The 9 July 2026 update confirms that Austrian citizens must carry a valid passport or ID card, even on short business hops across the Salzburg–Bavaria border. Airlines and hotels often reject documents that are more than five years out of date, despite German law technically allowing some grace. The clarification comes after reports of Austrian seasonal workers being denied boarding on Munich-bound coaches when they presented only digital credentials. Mobility managers should remind employees on training courses or trade-fair visits in Germany to bring hard-copy IDs and, for minors travelling on school exchanges, written parental consent. While the security level remains ‘1’, the advisory notes that major strikes can disrupt rail and air travel; links to official “Streikradar” portals are provided. Corporate travel policies should include contingency budgets for taxis or overnight stays when industrial action escalates. There is no change to visa-free entry for Austrian nationals, but companies posting third-country staff with Austrian residence permits must verify whether additional Schengen visas are required.
