Gibraltar becomes Schengen-aligned: what Austrian travellers need to know from today
As of 15 July 2026 Gibraltar’s frontier rules have shifted dramatically: the UK-EU Agreement on Gibraltar now applies provisionally, bringing the British Overseas Territory into the orbit of the Schengen Area. For Austrian passport-holders—and for EU-residents of any nationality with Austrian residence permits—the change removes decades-old formalities at the famous ‘Rock’ border with Spain. Short-stay visitors will now be processed under standard Schengen 90-in-180-day rules. That means time spent in Gibraltar counts towards the overall Schengen allowance—important for Austrians who winter in Andalusia and make frequent day-trips across the runway crossing into Gibraltar. Arrivals by air will face two sets of checks at Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport: Gibraltar officers will stamp travellers in, followed immediately by Spanish police conducting Schengen entry formalities, including biometric capture under the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES). The territory will also implement Schengen-compatible customs rules. Duty-free limits on alcohol and tobacco are disappearing, and travellers must declare high-value goods or face the same penalties levied at any EU external frontier. Business visitors transporting samples or equipment should prepare commercial invoices and, where necessary, ATA carnets to avoid delays. For Austrian companies that station staff in nearby Campo de Gibraltar or run cruise itineraries touching the port, the alignment simplifies mobility planning. No work visa is required for stays under 90 days, but longer assignments will involve local registration with Gibraltar’s Department of Immigration and Home Affairs; HR teams should update assignment letters accordingly. Finally, once ETIAS goes live later in 2026, non-EU family members of Austrian citizens will need electronic travel authorisation for Gibraltar, mirroring the rest of Schengen. Travel managers should start updating booking portals now so that Austria-based employees receive automated reminders about ETIAS, EES and the new customs model before the winter conference season.
