IRCC data show work-permit processing times improve across most countries
Employers who rely on Canadian work permits received welcome news on July 15 as IRCC released its weekly update to temporary-residence processing times. The snapshot shows marked improvement for many of Canada’s major source countries. Applicants from Nigeria experienced the biggest gain—a five-week drop to six weeks—while in-Canada applicants saw average waits fall below the 120-day service standard for the first time this year. Processing for U.S. nationals is now down to just three weeks. Visitor-visa and super-visa timelines were more mixed: wait times edged down for U.S. applicants but rose by five days for those filing from Pakistan. Study-permit estimates remained flat for the third consecutive week, holding at five to seven weeks depending on the country of origin. For global mobility teams, the data allow for more accurate start-date planning—particularly for inter-company transferees under the International Mobility Program, which relies on work-permit issuance. Companies moving staff from high-volume jurisdictions such as India (nine-week average) can now budget realistic lead times into project schedules. The improved figures also suggest IRCC’s summer staffing surge and digital processing tools are beginning to bear fruit. Nevertheless, applicants should treat the online tool as guidance, not guarantee. IRCC’s forward-looking model assumes current inventory levels and may shift quickly if application volumes spike ahead of the fall academic intake and the run-up to FIFA World Cup 2026™ events. Employers are advised to continue filing well in advance, ensure complete documentation, and monitor weekly updates for sudden country-specific changes. Longer term, business groups continue to press Ottawa to formalise expedited lanes—similar to the U.S. premium-processing model—for trusted employers that demonstrate high compliance and recurring labour-market needs.
