Heatwave drives record ‘staycation’, but EU border worries still bite
ITV News reports that more than 14 million leisure trips are expected on UK roads between 17 and 19 July as the Met Office forecasts a thirteenth consecutive day above 30 °C. While the warm spell is encouraging Britons to holiday at home, analysts say fears of cancelled flights, high airfares and potential EES queues on the continent are equally influential. The RAC predicts Friday 17 July will see the highest volume of getaway traffic since before the pandemic. Business-travel analysts at GlobalData note a 22 % year-on-year rise in companies moving summer conferences from Spain to UK coastal resorts, citing “cost and certainty”. Hotel chain Accor says corporate bookings for its Brighton properties are up 18 % on 2025. However, logistics chiefs caution that heavy domestic traffic could still affect international mobility. Hour-long hold-ups on the M20 approaching Dover last Easter led to missed ferry departures for time-sensitive consignments such as vaccines and just-in-time auto parts. Freight forwarder Ligentia recommends that exporters add 90-minute buffers to delivery schedules when routing goods through the short straits this weekend. The staycation trend also has immigration implications. Home Office statistics show a 9 % drop in short-term visitor visa applications for July compared with the same period last year. Airlines UK, representing carriers such as British Airways and easyJet, warns that sustained domestic demand could undermine the viability of some international routes unless border bottlenecks are resolved. Travel insurers remind policy-holders that domestic holidays still require cover for cancellation and curtailment, and that many policies do not automatically include missed-connection protection for ferry delays.
