The Interior Ministry and Poste Italiane signed a framework agreement on 17 July that will enable citizens to receive newly issued passports directly at home—or at an address of choice—starting 27 October. The service, now in pilot at Rome, Bari and Verona police stations, leverages Poste’s secure-delivery network with track-and-trace and identity-verification on hand-over. Applicants will pay a €9.05 logistics fee in addition to the standard €73.50 passport stamp and €42.50 booklet fee. Delivery is promised within 48 hours of issuance, with real-time status alerts via SMS or the PosteID app. For globally mobile employees, the change removes the need to collect documents in person—particularly beneficial for remote workers based far from their issuing Questura. Relocation providers expect shorter assignment lead times, as expats renewing passports no longer need to schedule collection trips that can delay visa filings. Legal practitioners note that the postal chain of custody qualifies as ‘secure service’ under regulation EU 910/2014 (eIDAS), preserving document integrity. Corporations should update global-mobility policies to reimburse the optional delivery fee and communicate cut-off dates: 10 October is the last day to opt-in for existing applications in the pilot cities.
