The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its Switzerland travel advisory on Saturday, 18 July, flagging the potential for severe disruption around the Franco-Swiss border ahead of next month’s G7 leaders’ meeting in nearby Evian (15–17 August). Swiss authorities plan to close several minor crossings with France in the days surrounding the summit and will impose enhanced security checks at those that remain open, measures that could trigger hours-long delays for motorists and coach passengers. The advice is particularly relevant to UK corporate travellers and holidaymakers who routinely transit via Geneva Airport or drive between France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and the Swiss cantons of Geneva and Vaud. Airlines have not announced schedule changes, but ground handlers expect longer queues at passport control as police tighten perimeter security. Rail services between Lyon and Geneva may also see spot checks. Travel-management companies (TMCs) are advising clients with meetings in Switzerland or eastern France in mid-August to build in extra journey time or consider flying direct into Zurich or Basel, well outside the security cordon. Firms with assignees based in Geneva have been reminded to carry Swiss residence permits to avoid secondary questioning at roadblocks. The FCDO notice also highlights an authorised protest in central Geneva on 14 August and warns of possible unauthorised protests from 12–19 August. Large demonstrations could spill onto key routes such as the Pont du Mont-Blanc, disrupting airport transfers and cross-border commutes. Although the G7 security footprint is temporary, observers say it provides a rehearsal for Switzerland’s full implementation of the EU Entry/Exit System later this year, which will similarly tighten border formalities for British nationals.
