Australia’s Smartraveller urges citizens to reconsider travel to UAE as air-risk bulletin extended
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its Smartraveller advisory for the United Arab Emirates on 21 July, maintaining the “Reconsider your need to travel” level and highlighting EASA’s recommendation that airlines avoid Gulf airspace until at least 29 July. The notice cites escalating US-Iran hostilities, missile activity and the threat of indiscriminate attacks on critical infrastructure. Travellers are warned that UAE airspace may close without notice, stranding passengers and disrupting onward connections. DFAT encourages those already in the country to locate hardened shelters in hotels or office towers and to avoid government or energy facilities that could be targeted. For Australian companies with operations in Dubai’s financial free zones, the advisory raises duty-of-care stakes. Legal teams note that travel insurance may be void if employees ignore government advice; some firms have therefore frozen non-essential trips and instructed fly-in-fly-out contractors to remain on rotation until the bulletin lapses. Immigration practitioners say that residence-visa renewals continue but that biometric appointments are being rescheduled to off-peak hours to limit time at public service centres. While DFAT advisories are non-binding, many corporates adopt them verbatim. Mobility managers should re-evaluate emergency evacuation providers and ensure that staff registers capture real-time location data for employees who choose to remain in the Emirates.
