Fáilte Project extends ‘Day One’ support for asylum seekers at Dublin’s Balseskin Reception Centre

Marking International Migrants Day on 23 July, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Europe highlighted the work of JRS Ireland’s Fáilte Project, which delivers immediate orientation and psychosocial support to new international-protection applicants arriving at Balseskin Reception Centre near Dublin Airport. The centre is the first touch-point for most asylum seekers entering the Irish system and currently houses about 900 residents, including families transferred from overcrowded hotels. Under the programme, trained volunteers meet new arrivals within 24 hours, providing multilingual briefings on Irish law, healthcare access, schooling and the right to work after six months. The project also facilitates SIM-card distribution and runs weekly clinics to help migrants activate Public Service Cards—documents increasingly required by employers and banks. JRS says early intervention reduces long-term integration costs by combating misinformation that can lead to missed appointments and legal delays. In the past year the project has referred 180 residents to pro-bono legal partners and organised cultural orientation trips to city libraries and community sports clubs. Corporate sponsors include two multinational tech firms whose global-mobility teams arrange employee volunteer days as part of ESG targets. The initiative comes amid sustained pressure on Ireland’s reception capacity: quarterly figures show 8,350 first-time asylum applications lodged between January and June 2026, up 14 % year on year. The Department of Justice is finalising legislation to shorten the decision timetable to nine months, but NGOs warn that without front-loaded support many applicants risk social isolation and destitution. For global companies seconding staff to Ireland, the Fáilte model offers lessons on rapid-onboarding practices that could translate into corporate relocation programmes—particularly its emphasis on immediate digital inclusion and community links.
