Ireland Updates Employment Permit Processing Dates as Backlogs Ease

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) quietly refreshed the “Current processing dates” page on 22 July 2026 to show modest progress in tackling the queue of work-permit applications. According to the update, Critical Skills Employment Permit files submitted up to 7 July are now being assessed, while new General Employment Permit (GEP) cases lodged up to 15 June have reached case-officer desks. Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits filed on 22 June are also under review and standard renewals are back to 10 April. The two-week improvement since DETE’s 8 July snapshot signals the first sustained clearing of backlogs since the department’s new e-Permit portal launched last spring. The portal digitised what had been a largely paper-driven process, but a surge of incomplete uploads and duplicate records initially slowed average decision times from six to more than ten weeks. Over 55 temporary staff and overtime rosters have since been approved to stabilise throughput, DETE told industry stakeholders in a Trusted-Partner webinar on Wednesday. For employers, the faster cadence is critical. ICT permits are the backbone of short-term assignments for multinationals headquartered in Dublin’s Silicon Docks, while Critical Skills and GEPs cover software engineers, nurses, construction managers and other shortage roles. Several technology firms had warned of missed project kick-off dates and relocation delays because permit issuance was slipping behind start dates. HR leaders can now tentatively plan onboarding for August and September starts, though DETE cautions that "reviews/appeals" remain stuck at applications received 30 December 2025. Advisers still recommend budgeting at least eight weeks from application to entry visa because Irish visa offices abroad are operating on separate schedules. Nonetheless, the 22 July figures bolster confidence that the permit queue will return to the government’s six-week service standard by early autumn. Multinationals should monitor the DETE web page every Friday for rolling updates and use the department’s batch-query function to flag urgent cases linked to high-value investments or equipment installation windows. Companies may also use the Trusted-Partner channel, which processes about 60 % of all permits, to shave a further week off processing once volumes normalise.
