FCDO renews ‘no-travel’ advice to Iran, highlights complex border-exit visa requirements
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) re-validated its travel advice for Iran on 27 July, maintaining its warning against all travel and adding detailed guidance for British nationals attempting to leave overland via Armenia, Azerbaijan or Turkey. The update notes that Iranian airspace and land borders may close at short notice amid escalating regional tensions and that some neighbouring countries now demand pre-registered exit codes or additional visa paperwork for UK passport holders. The FCDO also confirmed that non-essential UK Embassy staff have been temporarily withdrawn from Tehran and that consular support is being delivered remotely. British and dual British-Iranian nationals face a “very high risk” of arbitrary detention; the advice reiterates that holding a UK passport can be sufficient grounds for arrest under Iranian security laws. For multinational firms with operations in the Gulf and South-West Asia, the renewed advisory raises duty-of-care stakes. Companies should audit traveller-tracking systems to ensure rapid repatriation options, review kidnap-and-detention insurance coverage, and confirm that contingency visas for Turkey or the Caucasus are in place should air corridors close. Crucially, employees seeking to exit Iran by land must check the visa requirements of destination countries—Turkey remains visa-free for short stays, but Azerbaijan requires advance registration via the British Embassy in Ankara. Failure to secure correct paperwork could leave travellers stranded at the frontier amid fluid security conditions.
