Polish border guards at the busy Medyka road crossing on the Ukrainian frontier have revealed details of a document-fraud case that unfolded during the evening shift of 27 July. Officers became suspicious when a 45-year-old woman produced a Romanian national identity card whose security features looked inconsistent under ultraviolet light. Using magnification, microprint analysis and the national document database, inspectors quickly confirmed the card was counterfeit. The traveller then admitted she was in fact a Ukrainian national who had never visited Romania. According to the Bieszczadzki Border Guard press release, the woman had spent several months working in Germany. When her lawful residence there expired she was advised by an intermediary to obtain “EU papers” so she could continue working without the need for a work visa. She paid for the forged ID by taking cash advances from her salary while caring for elderly clients. After a short interview she was returned to Ukrainian territory and the case file forwarded to prosecutors for charges under Article 264-§2 of Poland’s Criminal Code (use of a forged document). The incident illustrates two intersecting trends on Poland’s eastern flank: the continuing demand for low-skilled labour in Western Europe and the thriving illicit market for travel documents that can help non-EU nationals evade visa rules. Polish authorities report that since January 2026 officers on the south-eastern border alone have seized more than 2,200 fraudulent documents, ranging from Schengen visas to vehicle registrations. For employers and mobility managers the case is a reminder that workers recruited through informal networks may resort to desperate measures as permits expire. Companies relying on staff who commute or rotate through Poland and Germany should build document-validation checks into their onboarding and travel-approval workflows. Failure to detect deliberate ID fraud can expose firms to fines of up to PLN 50,000 and multi-year bans on hiring foreigners. Practically, travellers entering or leaving Poland should expect intensified secondary inspections this summer as the Border Guard deploys new document scanners purchased with EU Integrated Border Management funds. Corporate travel teams are advised to brief staff on longer processing times at Medyka, Korczowa and Dorohusk and to ensure originals of residence permits and work contracts are carried at all times.
