The waiver was triggered after National Weather Service models showed a moisture-laden cold front stalling over central Florida, creating the potential for heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning during peak travel hours. Thunderstorms are notoriously disruptive for Florida’s hub-and-spoke airport network because most facilities run near capacity year-round; any ground-stop quickly cascades into missed connections and crew-scheduling challenges that can last for days.
