National tourism agency Visit Finland and Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 15 September at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, paving the way for the Gulf carrier’s first year-round service to Helsinki. Daily Boeing 777 flights will start on 1 October 2026, giving Finland its only non-stop connection to the Middle East and, via Emirates’ hub, one-stop access to more than 140 destinations across Asia, Africa and Australasia. Under the MoU the partners will co-fund marketing campaigns in strategically important feeder markets such as Japan, South-Korea, Australia and Saudi Arabia, highlighting Finland’s winter experiences and summer wilderness products. Incentive programmes for travel agents and familiarisation trips for tour operators are also planned. Emirates, meanwhile, will promote Finland through its in-flight entertainment platform and loyalty scheme Skywards, offering bonus-point promotions to encourage stop-overs in Helsinki. Business-travel stakeholders stand to benefit significantly. The Dubai gateway will slash flight times to emerging markets in South-Asia and East-Africa, areas currently underserved by Finnair’s network. Corporate mobility teams can leverage the new link to streamline rotation schedules for Finnish engineers working on Gulf infrastructure mega-projects or Nordic executives heading to African energy ventures. The route is timed for convenient connections to Emirates’ late-evening Asian bank, allowing same-day arrivals in major cities such as Mumbai, Singapore and Bangkok. From an immigration perspective, the service is expected to push up demand for Finnish Schengen visas in the Gulf region, where Visit Finland says enquiry volumes have doubled since pandemic restrictions were lifted. The Foreign Ministry is therefore dispatching additional visa-processing staff to its embassy in Abu Dhabi and exploring representation agreements with other Nordic missions in the region. The agreement also includes a side letter with the Finland Business Council in Dubai that grants corporate members discounted fares and excess-baggage allowances— perks aimed at boosting SME participation in trade missions. Finland’s 2025-2028 national tourism strategy lists improved air connectivity as a top priority; officials estimate the Dubai flight could generate up to €120 million in incremental visitor spend during its first full year of operation.
