Genoa public-transport strike today adds last-mile risk for cruise and ferry passengers
The Ministry of Transport’s strike register confirms that personnel of AMT Genova have launched a 24-hour walk-out today, 19 September, affecting buses, metro and the city’s vertical lifts. The action, called by CUB Trasporti after failed talks over roster changes linked to summer timetable extensions, is classed as ‘territorial’ but disrupts critical last-mile links between the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal and Genoa Piazza Principe rail hub. AMT will run guaranteed services from 06:00–09:00 and 17:30–20:30, but outside these windows travellers can expect gaps of up to 60 minutes. MSC Cruises has already advised passengers disembarking from MSC Fantasia this morning to pre-book taxis or private shuttles. Freight forwarders moving time-sensitive ro-ro cargo through the adjacent ferry pier warn that driver turnaround times could breach EU rest-period rules. Companies running shore-based training or crew changes should budget extra hotel nights if onward Trenitalia connections are missed. Mobility teams should also note that taxi availability may tighten further because Uber Med drivers are staging a solidarity slowdown. From a compliance standpoint, the walk-out triggers the exceptional-travel clause under Legislative Decree 66/2003, allowing employers to reimburse higher taxi fares without fringe-benefit tax. Expense-policy templates may need a same-day update. The prefect has ordered AMT to produce a recovery plan by Monday; further strikes cannot be declared for ten days, providing a brief planning window for cruise lines and logistics operators.
