An operational circular released on 22 September confirms that additional East Rail Line trips will also be slotted in over the following weekend (26-27 September) to handle heavy cross-boundary and leisure traffic. Overnight rail operations are rare in Hong Kong and require co-ordination with police crowd-management teams and the Transport Department, which has ordered contingency bus fleets on standby at interchange stations. Light Rail and selected MTR Bus routes (506, K51 and K54A) will mirror the late-night extension, giving New Territories residents a seamless interchange. For employers organising corporate moon-gazing events or late shifts, the extended timetable offers staff a safe, low-cost way to return home without resorting to taxis—important given the city’s ongoing shortage of late-night cabs. HR teams should circulate the special schedule and remind foreign assignees that Octopus card top-ups may face long queues after midnight. MTRC warns that crowd-control gates may be activated at busy hubs such as Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok and Sha Tin. Passengers should allow extra time and follow station announcements.
