A joint operation carried out in the early hours of 22 September by officers of the Warsaw Police and the Nadbużański Border Guard has dealt a serious blow to one of the country’s most active car-theft networks. Working on intelligence that high-end vehicles were being moved across Poland’s external border under false documentation, investigators tracked a convoy of vans to a warehouse on the outskirts of the capital. Inside they discovered 25 cars that had been reported stolen in Poland, Germany and the Netherlands over the past six weeks, many of them with tampered VIN numbers and forged registration plates. Seven suspects—five Poles and two Belarusian nationals—were taken into custody. Border Guard forensics specialists spent the day documenting each vehicle and matching engine and chassis numbers against European stolen-vehicle databases. The preliminary valuation puts the recovered fleet at nearly PLN 1.5 million (€330,000). Prosecutors have already secured court approval for three-month pre-trial detention for five of the suspects and say additional arrests are likely as digital evidence is analysed. Although the investigation focused on organised theft, it has immediate implications for legitimate cross-border traffic. The Border Guard announced that randomly intensified checks will continue this week at Terespol (Belarus) and Korczowa (Ukraine)—two crossings known to be used by smugglers—to intercept any additional stolen vehicles in transit. Logistics companies operating just-in-time supply chains have been warned to factor in potential delays of up to two hours. For mobility and relocation managers the case is a reminder that vehicle import/export procedures remain a key compliance risk when moving staff or assets across Poland’s eastern frontier. Employers have been advised to review whether transferees’ private cars meet Polish registration standards and to ensure that leasing documents travel with the vehicle, as officers are now scrutinising paperwork more closely. In addition, insurance carriers are expected to tighten underwriting standards for cross-border fleet policies.
